What is AIS-1?
An open smart contract standard for a bonded identity pair

AIS-1 defines an open smart contract standard for a bonded identity pair — a single cryptographic token that permanently links an AI agent's identity to its sponsor's identity. Neither party can be separated from the other without revoking the bond.

The standard addresses the Wild Agent Problem: the near-total absence of formal identity, legal accountability, and compliance infrastructure for autonomous AI agents. The Bond is a legal accountability link between the agent and its sponsor — not a financial instrument.

Built on ERC-721 · ERC-8002 · W3C DID. The specification, white paper, reference Solidity implementation, DID method spec, and JSON-LD vocabulary are all published under CC0 at ais-1.org.

The agent's primary identity record: Agent DID, agent name & type, capabilities array, chain addresses, AML status, model/framework, and metadata URI (IPFS).

The sponsor's identity record: Sponsor DID, legal name, entity type, jurisdiction, registration number, KYC status, and Verifiable Credential URI. Sponsors carry legal accountability for their bonded agents.

AIS-1 Bond
An on-chain record linking agent DID to sponsor DID. The bond hash is keccak256(agentDid ++ sponsorDid ++ timestamp ++ tier). Soulbound via ERC-8002 — non-transferable. Optional secondary timestamping service.

Verifiable DID
All registered agents maintain a resolvable did:ais1 identifier. DIDs are W3C DID Core conformant and resolvable via the ais-1.org resolver.

verifyBond() Function
Any counterparty calls verifyBond(bondId) before transacting. Returns: valid (bool), tier (uint8), sponsorDid (string), amlStatus (uint8). Performs CDD in milliseconds at every transaction — KYC done once, compliance everywhere.
AIS-1 Tiers

AIS-1 defines three tiers. Enter at Basic with no friction, graduate to Verified when commercial stakes require it, achieve Sovereign status when full legal standing is needed.

TIER 0
Basic
Permissionless. Anyone can issue. No KYC/AML required. Self-declared sponsor. Gas fees only. Suitable for development and prototype agents.
TIER 1
Verified
Authorised issuer only. Full KYC/AML of sponsor. AML status embedded in bond. verifyBond() returns cleared status. For commercial and enterprise agents.
TIER 2
Sovereign
Full legal wrapper. Enhanced due diligence. Government-issued Verifiable Credential in sponsor card. Physical data presence in issuing jurisdiction. For regulated and financial agents.
